Abstract

This study investigated the language variations in the Indonesian movie Agak Laen 1 with a focus on the regional dialects and social dialects from a sociolinguistic point of view. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of dialects used by the characters in the movie and to describe the function of the language variations. The study was conducted using the qualitative descriptive method. The data was collected from the dialogues of the characters in the movie. The data was analyzed by categorizing the language variations into regional dialects and social dialects using the theories of linguistics proposed by Wardhaugh, Holmes, and Trudgill. The findings of the study revealed that the regional dialects in the movie Agak Laen 1 are greatly influenced by the dialects of the people of Batak, Malay, and Sumatra. The regional dialects are identified by the use of distinctive words, expressions, and sentence structures. The social dialects are identified by the use of informal words, slang, and casual expressions. The conclusion drawn from the study is that the use of regional and social dialects in the film makes it natural, realistic, and relatable. The diversity in cultures and languages in Indonesian society is also emphasized in the film. Thus, it can be concluded that Agak Laen 1 is an effective medium of sociolinguistic analysis.
