Abstract

Bullying in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) remains a persistent problem masked by entrenched seniority culture and hierarchical communication patterns. This article analyzes the integration of Islamic persuasive communication principles specifically Qaulan Layyinan, Qaulan Balighan, Qaulan Sadidan, and Qaulan Kariman with Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a conceptual framework for bullying prevention within the context of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). Using a qualitative library research method, this study synthesizes primary and secondary sources including empirical research on pesantren communication, anti-bullying education literature, and Islamic educational psychology. The findings demonstrate that the convergence of SDT's three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) with the Islamic concept of Izzah (dignity) generates intrinsic motivation for prosocial behavior change. Persuasive communication delivered through qaulan principles effectively dismantles defensive psychological barriers, enabling transformative dialogue between educators and students. The study recommends implementing simulation-based training, informal interpersonal counseling by ustadz/ustadzah, and restorative ta'zir aligned with child protection regulations as a comprehensive model for a child-friendly pesantren ecosystem.
