Sufism is frequently perceived as an individual spiritual path, yet it possesses a profound social dimension. This study aims to uncover the Qur’anic and hadith foundations of zuhd (asceticism) and richness of the soul, and to analyse their implementation in the practices of the Prophet’s Companions—particularly ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, Abū Bakar al-Ṣiddīq, and Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī—as the basis of Islamic social ethics. Employing a qualitative approach with library research and intertextual analysis, the study finds that zuhd is not synonymous with material poverty but rather liberation of the heart from worldly attachment, thereby enabling multiplied charitable giving and concern for the weak. The philanthropic practices of the Companions remain highly relevant as contemporary models of social ethics in addressing economic inequality, humanitarian crises, and rampant consumerism among Muslims today.
